Dried up Christmas tree / Tossed onto summer bonfire / Lights up one last time.
This single white hair— / A message backwards in time / From a future crone.
Booming explosions— / Dog's least favorite holiday / Is spent under bed.
After thirty years / Just the same, and yet better / These dear high school friends.
The decades dissolve / As time loops back on itself— / Laughter transcends years.
In the waiting room / License for guilty pleasure– / Gossip magazine.
Sunlit turquoise sea— / All words drown in its beauty / Except "Blue! Blue! Blue!"
Summer in Humboldt— / We invent new words for fog / Hoping for shadows.
The almost-full moon, / Growing brighter every night, / Awaits your return.
August afternoon / Just-picked blackberry, so sweet / Summer explodes in mouth.
Sunscreening my back / My young son practices / For his future children.
Virtuous breakfast / Of brown rice and soy sauce — / Cookies at ten.
hotel breakfast buffet / all you can eat / but nothing you'd care to.
farmer's market / summer's last peaches / bittersweet
we're not really friends / but Facebook thinks we should be— / awkward encounter
old anxieties / wind tugs at browning leaves / time to let go
driving lesson / half the parking lot / far enough for now
stuffed pork loin / for Thanksgiving dinner— / turkey gives thanks
whispered message / of each new wrinkle and gray hair— / rejoice! you're still here
spider stuck in tub / runs from my rescue attempt / missing big picture
Mom has been busy / recycling bin overflows / with empty soup cans
dark winter's day / finally we replace / the burnt out bulbs
you stepped off the world / now it hangs / askew
the scent of white lilies / in the photo you smile / as you did in life
busy crosswalk / my dog stops to make / his ablutions
winter night / the dog crawls deeper / under the covers
cracking an egg / how quickly a world / can end

family dinner / the air jammed with / silence

scudding clouds— / raindrops on the clothesline / hanging out to dry
your skin so warm— / outside, the wild currant / blossoms into pink
I come home early / he hurriedly turns off / the opera
tide pool / the sea too / is full of stars
breath follows breath / how many more / left in the queue?
ghostly sandals / still crisscross bare feet / summer's end
volcano spews / sometimes the earth / just needs to vent
sick in bed / my child comes to read me / fairy tales
blonde wig / the checkout clerk / checks her out
hospital x-ray / his hidden heart / revealed at last
dark bedroom / an unexpected French kiss / from our French poodle
wind on the lake / the round yellow moon / breaks into ripples
rain beats down / my bedside lamp / glows yellow
the dog zips ahead / chasing the scent / of spring
